Jin yells, “Honor died on the beach!”, trying to convince his uncle that they will lose the war if they allow themselves to be exploited by their honor ( Ghost of Tsushima, act 2, mission 3). Lord Shimura realizes that his nephew had completely abandoned his honor, eventually slapping Jin out of frustration. Jin and Lord Shimura have a large argument that this could have been prevented and Jin suggests that he is able to take the castle back by poisoning the enemy. Eventually Jin reaches a bridge to witness the samurai losing a hefty defeat again, similar to the events that transpired at the beach. ![]() While fighting, Lord Shimura starts to see his nephew’s ways of dealing with the Mongols and constantly reminds Jin that he is not following the samurai code. Mission 3, “The Fate of Tsushima”, Jin and his allies are already storming the front of Castle Shimura, pushing back the Mongols. In Act 2, we are reunited with Jin’s uncle and are tasked with reclaiming Castle Shimura from the Mongols. Though Jin does not acknowledge himself as the Ghost, he realizes that he may need to be the Ghost. “At this point, he’s starts to realize something, he just isn’t sure what yet… he comes to an epiphany… the Ghost is his way forward” (McKinstry, p. But further in the story, Jin begins to realize that being the Ghost may be the best way to save Tsushima. Throughout the story so far Jin still does not believe himself to be the “Ghost”, he still thinks of himself as a samurai and still follows most of his uncle’s code of the samurai, in hopes to be forgiven. Jin starts being branded as the “Ghost of Tsushima”. The people of Tsushima start seeing him as hero figure, a hero that raises hopes of the inhabitants while striking fear in the invaders. Jin sits up and just stares at the corpse…contemplating what he had just done.įurther in the story, Jin slowly reclaims Tsushima one piece at a time by using forbidden and dishonorable methods in the eyes of the shogun. This is shown in Jin’s emotions after the flashback ends. Jin’s assassination directly goes against everything he has ever learned in his childhood training years. They fend him off and his uncle teaches Jin an important life lesson as a samurai, “When we fight, we face our enemy head-on. Him and his uncle are hunting when an assassin attempts to kill his uncle. We are then greeted by a flashback back when Jin was a child being trained by his uncle, providing Jin important lessons of honor in becoming a samurai. Jin silently sneaks up behind the guard and struggles but silently assassinates the guard. ![]() The first mission, “The Warriors Code”, is where we see Jin’s first major choice in sacrificing his morals. Jin witnesses nearly all his samurai brethren die in battle and realizes that this is a losing battle if they continue to fight with honor. Even the leader of the invading Mongols mentions that he had studied the samurai to exploit their biggest weakness, their honor among battle. ![]() Ultimately, the samurai lose due to how the samurai have to follow their strict code in staying honorable while the Mongol’s can act as barbaric as they want, giving the Mongols a very large advantage. The beach scene is where Jin, Lord Shimura, and the rest of the samurai are faced with the Mongols for the first time, charging into battle. The opening scene is what kick-starts Jin’s descent into his massive character development. The character development of Jin Sakai from Ghost of Tsushima thoroughly establishes the overarching theme of sacrifice. His journey within the game shows his transformation from an honorable samurai to an assassin that uses any means to fend off the Mongols, a “ghost” people call him. Jin is conflicted with keeping his honor as a samurai but doing so risks the defeat of his homeland. Jin goes through his story reclaiming the island from the invaders while also facing his inner struggle. Mongolians have targeted the island, but Jin and the samurai of Tsushima have every intent to die defending their homeland. Ghost of Tsushima tells the story of Jin Sakai, an inhabitant from Tsushima Island in Japan of 1274. “Honor died on the beach!” These words reverberate through the player when Jin Sakai yells them with anger and desperation at his uncle, Lord Shimura.
